‘We understand’: Sky journalist claims Liverpool want £20m fee to sell their 21-year-old player this summer

Liverpool want £20m if they are to sell Neco Williams during this summer’s transfer window.

That’s according to Sky Sports journalist Rob Jones. As seen on the Sky Sports News Twitter page, Jones claimed that Nottingham Forest are now interested in the Liverpool defender.

“Forest are in the market for a right-back,” said the journalist. “Djed Spence had a successful loan spell there last season, but it looks unlikely that he’s going to return this season with Forest back in the Premier League.

“So Williams is one of the targets for Steve Cooper and Nottingham Forest. Liverpool looking for a package that we understand adds up to £20m for the Wales defender.”

A fair price to pay

To some, £20m may sound like too-steep-a asking price for Williams. Liverpool were asking for half that a mere six months ago.

But in truth, it seems like an entirely fair fee. Williams excelled on-loan at Fulham and also has experience of the Premier League and Champions League under his belt.

The fact that he’s a full and celebrated international footballer should only add to his value, too.

In any case, Liverpool would be wise to include a sell-on clause too. Williams looks like he could get even better in the coming years and The Reds need make sure that they feel the benefit of his likely development.

Liverpool secure Williams replacement

The only hitch from a Liverpool point of view is that they’ve just brought in Calvin Ramsay to fill Williams’ role in the squad.

Prospective buyers will obviously be aware of this and it will likely weaken Liverpool’s negotiating position.

It has also been claimed that Williams is very keen to leave Anfield in order to secure first-team football. The 21-year-old has a World Cup to prepare for and will want to be in the best shape he possibly can be for that.

From that perspective, Liverpool are under a little bit of pressure to sell. With several teams said to be vying for his signature though, the club is still in a strong position.
