Report: Liverpool insiders now not sure if they're ever going to sign 'phenomenal' player, forming a back-up plan

Liverpool are concerned that increased interest in reported target Jude Bellingham could lead to them being priced-out of a move.

That’s according to journalist David Lynch. Writing for The National, Lynch claims that there is ‘pessimism’ at Liverpool over their ability to secure Bellingham next summer.

Due to ‘wider interest,’ Liverpool are reportedly worried that the player’s wage demands will prove to be beyond them.

As a result, other targets have been ‘watched closely,’ but Lynch doesn’t divulge who these are. He does, however, claim that Liverpool will look for a player in the early 20’s with an ‘impressive athletic profile.’

It’s also reported that a ‘big fee’ would not be a problem for Liverpool. Instead, high wage demands could scupper any prospective deal for Bellingham, or other targets.

Let the games begin

It feels inevitable that next summer is going to be the Jude Bellingham transfer window.

The teenager took the step of announcing his intention to stay at Borussia Dortmund for another season. Now, the England star is expected to leave next summer instead.

This will likely lead to a rush from top clubs around Europe to secure one of the best youngsters in the world.

For a long time, Liverpool have been said to be one of the front-runners to sign the player Erling Haaland called ‘phenomenal’ via ESPN FC Podcast.

But Real Madrid are now said to have entered the fray. As was the case with Aurelien Tchouameni this summer, Madrid would be willing to gazump The Reds on wages.

Other teams may well throw their hat into the ring too, at which point Liverpool would be reliant on the player choosing the ‘sporting project’ at Anfield.

That remains a possibility of course. Bellingham is still comfortably young enough to earn another bigger contract further down the line. Perhaps then he’ll see the merit of taking a lower offer at Liverpool.

In the meantime though, it’s good to hear that the club is actively looking at solutions for a position which is in need of a bit of a revamp.
