Tottenham Hotspur now want to sign a £22m defender that Liverpool have tracked long-term, according to reports. The Reds will likely miss out here.
This comes from the Mirror. They claim that Tottenham Hotspur want Torino defender Gleison Bremer and could pay around £22m to get him this summer.
It comes after Antonio Conte’s side clinched a deal for Yves Bissouma and it appears they’re far from done there. Spurs will attempt to get Bremer – a player Liverpool supposedly like.
Corriere Granata claimed all the way back in December 2020 that Liverpool wanted the player. That was during their centre-back crisis, of course, but the Reds passed on the opportunity that winter. Links refused to go away, however, and Goal said in April that Liverpool still had eyes on Bremer.
The big difference now, though, is that Bremer’s price has skyrocketed. Liverpool could apparently have snatched him up for around £5.4m back in January 2021.
There’s a good reason for the rise, though. The Brazilian enjoyed a wonderful season with Torino, winning Serie A’s Best Defender award. It seems Liverpool missed out on a bargain.
Tottenham Hotspur want defender Gleison Bremer
Bremer appears to have fantastic ability and Liverpool certainly could have secured him on the cheap 18 months ago. However, it’s hard to regret that too much.
BEST Brazilian Premier League XI 21/22
We doubt Liverpool would have signed Ibrahima Konaté last year if Bremer was at the club. It’s hard to find games for four centre-backs, after all, let alone five – the investment wouldn’t have been worth it.
So while Bremer may well go on to be one of the best around, we think Konaté could become the best around. We’ll focus on that as Spurs look to pick up the Brazilian.
One that potentially got away, then, but Liverpool should still comfortably come out on top.
