Liverpool really missed a chance to save £35m on Brazilian player set for a transfer this summer - RTK View

Liverpool target Gleison Bremer is reportedly worth a small fortune, say the latest reports. The Reds missed a bargain here.

The Telegraph reports that Leicester City now want Gleison Bremer. The Torino defender has been making waves over the last two season, building a reputation that’s drawing massive transfer interest.

In fact, that interest now sees Bremer valued at £40m. It’s a huge fee for the 25-year-old but one he arguably justifies. The Foxes aren’t the only interested party, either, as both Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool want the player.

It partially backs up a report from Goal earlier this month. They claim Inter lead the race for Bremer but Liverpool do still want him – only, the figure is £20m.

It’s entirely possible, then, that Torino keep pushing that price up as more and more teams take an interest. Bremer could well fetch £40m this summer, then, when he’s expected to move on.

And that might just hurt Liverpool.

Liverpool miss Gleison Bremer bargain

Liverpool’s interest in Bremer actually dates back to late 2020. Corriere Granata claimed back then that the Reds viewed him as a potential January signing in 2021.

That, of course, was right in the middle of Liverpool’s injury crisis. They’d eventually bring Ozan Kabak in on loan and sign Ben Davies from Preston North End. Neither deal really worked out, however.

What particularly hurts, then, is the price quoted for Bremer – £5.4m. That’s a long, long way from £40m but it just goes to show how far he’s risen over the last year.

Liverpool could have saved around £35m on Bremer if they’d moved in January 2021. Instead, they’d have to pay a massive amount for a defender they probably don’t need anymore.

And that’s why this one is actually okay to handle. Signing Bremer permanently last year would have almost certainly meant Liverpool don’t sign Ibrahima Konate. Even at a £5m bargain, we’d still prefer to have the 22-year-old Konate, who looks set to be a world-class defender one day – if he isn’t already.

Liverpool’s retained interest does suggest they still see room for Bremer, though. If they do move for a centre-back this summer, they could end up regretting not moving for this one sooner.
