Darwin Nunez's Benfica teammates react on Instagram after £85m man seals move to Liverpool

Darwin Nunez’s former Benfica teammates have reacted to the striker joining Liverpool yesterday.

After Nunez was formally announced as Liverpool’s newest recruit, he took to Instagram to record his feelings.

“Dreaming like a child,” wrote The Reds’ number 27. “Dreams do come true.”

Among those to reacted were former strike partners in Lisbon Roman Yaremchuk and Haris Seferovic. Yaremchuk, who also scored at Anfield in April sent a series of clapping emoji, while Seferovic wrote “Todo o mejor” which translates to something like ‘all the best.’

Alex Grimaldo went with “Mucha suerte hermano,” or ‘good luck brother,’ while Julian Weigl kept it simple with some clapping emoji’s and a love heart thrown in for good measure.

Looks like he’ll be missed by his teammates. They’ll have to find someone else to rattle in the goals next season.

Darwin joins Liverpool

It has felt like a long couple of days of waiting for Liverpool fans. It was actually less than 10 days ago that serious interest in Nunez from The Reds was reported.

But the intervening time has dragged on as negotiations between the clubs went back and forth.

All things considered though, Liverpool have wrapped up this mammoth deal pretty quickly. At times, these kind of enormous transfers can take all summer to get done.

Liverpool have seen off interest from others and boxed off their new striker in a matter of days. Undoubtedly a very impressive start from Julian Ward in his new role as Sporting Direcotr.

Living up to the price-tag

The fee involved is obviously a big one. At £64m up-front, Darwin currently comes in as Liverpool’s third biggest outlay ever in the market.

The £75m paid to Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk and the £65m Roma got for Alisson Becker are the only two occasions Liverpool have spent more.

Should things go to plan though, Nunez will cost Liverpool £85m.

Obviously, the other two names on that list have been roaring successes at the club. It would be truly difficult for Nunez to match the impact of either.

If he can come close though, then the money will have been very well spent. It isn’t often that The Reds see fit to dish out such large sums. But Jurgen Klopp is convinced that the Uruguayan is the man to take his attack to the next level.

Welcome Darwin, we can’t wait to watch you play!
