Adel Taarabt says incoming Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is like a mix of Fernando Torres and Edinson Cavani.
Speaking to TalkSPORT about his teammate of two years at Benfica, Taarabt claimed he could see Darwin’s talent almost immediately.
“Last year when he arrived, Benfica bought him from Almeria, nobody knew him really,” said the former Tottenham man.
“It was already a big fee, so a lot of people were surprised, but when we saw him in the first training, we understood that he was going to be one of the best strikers in the world.”
Taarabt then went on to shock hosts Darren Ambrose and Alex Crook with who he compared the Liverpool new-boy too.
“His mentality since he’s 17, 18, you know South Americans. How I compare Darwin, he has a mix of Cavani and Torres, he can jump, he can go behind, for me he’s a mix of both,” said Taarabt to gasps of “Wow” from both Ambrose and Crook.
That sounds pretty good to us!
The latest on Nunez
If all goes to plan, it looks as though Nunez could even be announced as a new Liverpool player as early as today.
An official statement from Benfica via slbenfica.pt confirmed the agreement with The Reds for their star man just this morning.
According to the statement, an up-front fee of £64m has been agreed. This, however, could reach £85.5m if all add-ons are met.
As reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, the 22-year-old is expected in Liverpool for his medical today.
If all goes well, we could well see the Uruguayan posing at the AXA Training Centre in the coming hours and days.
That would conclude a week of negotiations in which Liverpool look to have knocked down Benfica’s asking price by around £4m.
It remains to be seen exactly what the add-on’s are. Some reports from Portugal have claimed that the extra money will be solely based on Nunez’s appearances at Liverpool.
It’s yet to be corroborated exactly when the extra £21m will be due to the Lisbon club. Should Nunez be the success that Taarabt claims he will be though, it will make him comfortably Liverpool’s biggest signing of all time.
Exciting days ahead, Reds!
