Chelsea have stormed into the lead of the race to sign Ousmane Dembele in a free transfer once his contract with Barcelona expires on June 30, against rival Premier League interest from Liverpool.

That’s according to talkSPORT, who report the Blues have suddenly gazumped their rival suitors and are now considered the favourites. Thomas Tuchel’s pursuit of his former Borussia Dortmund winger took off ‘overnight’, as the Stamford Bridge outfit chase the first signing of Todd Boehly’s ownership.

Dembele has been running down his deal at the Camp Nou to create the potential for a free transfer this summer. The 25-year-old has struggled to live up to his price tag since moving to Catalunya in an initial £97m transfer, rising up to £135.5m with add-ons, in 2017, having often suffered with injuries.

Now, the Frenchman is open to a move away to kickstart his career after a productive run to end the 2021/22 campaign. Dembele produced 13 assists and scored once over 21 La Liga games for his best haul since moving to Spain. His previous high was the seven set during his debut campaign in ‘17/18.

Dembele had earned his lucrative move to Spain after a dazzling Bundesliga campaign under Tuchel in ‘16/17. The speedy wideman offered 13 assists and scored six goals over 32 outings in the German top-flight. But the frequent stream of fitness issues meant his Camp Nou career was often blighted.

Chelsea overtake Liverpool offer to lead race for free Ousmane Dembele transfer

Now, Dembele will likely leave Barcelona on July 1 and Chelsea are emerging as the favourites for his signature over interest from Liverpool. Reports by Sport claim the Reds made the 27-cap dynamo an offer to join Jurgen Klopp’s side in late May after approaching his representatives to discuss a move.

The Anfield hierarchy sought talks as Jurgen Klopp has demanded two or three attacking deals with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane’s futures uncertain. But the German seems unlikely to see a winger whose pace Lionel Messi called ‘frightening’ arrive on Merseyside before Liverpool host Chelsea.
