Dean Saunders has claimed that Alisson Becker is worth ’15 or 20′ points per season to Liverpool in the Premier League.
Speaking to TalkSPORT, the former Liverpool striker claimed that just by being in the team, Alisson boosts The Reds’ points tally.
“You can more or less predict how many points Van Dijk is worth to Liverpool. You can predict how many points Alisson, when he signed, is worth to Liverpool as a goalkeeper,” said Saunders.
“If you sort of predicted yourself in your own head how many points do you think Alisson’s worth? I’d say a season, just by having him in the goal, I’d say he’s worth about 15, 20 points for Liverpool. He saves things he shouldn’t and, they all make mistakes, but he doesn’t make that many.”
That may be an over-exaggeration from the Welshman, but there’s no denying the Brazilian’s importance to the side.
Alisson’s best year yet
When picking a player who has impressed the most in a season, it’s often the attacking players who get the spotlight.
As with most teams, that’s also the case for Liverpool. All of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz had largely brilliant seasons for The Reds.
Salah, Mane and even Diaz could all make a claim to be Liverpool’s player of the season.
So too could Trent Alexander-Arnold or Virgil Van Dijk. Andy Robertson, Fabinho, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara were also brilliant for prolonged periods.
None though were as consistently incredible as Alisson Becker. The 29-year-old had his best season yet for Liverpool. He won the Golden Glove for most clean sheets and conceded only 24 goals in 36 Premier League games.
Liverpool’s player of the season
Alisson constantly bailed The Reds out of sticky situations in 2021/22. In doing so, he cemented his status as the best one-v-one goalkeeper in the world.
Liverpool can play their high defensive line only because of Alisson’s quality in such situations. Time and again he saved Liverpool at crucial moments in games.
He was the hero in the FA Cup final shootout and impressed with the ball at his feet too.
Thibaut Courtois’ display in the Champions League final may have put his name up their as the best goalkeeper in the world right now. But we wouldn’t swap anyone for Alisson.
A superstar in goal right at the peak of his powers. Alisson Becker was, for us, Liverpool FC’s Player of the Season. No goals for Ali this time around though, we’re expecting a couple next season to make up for it!
