Liverpool could face an exodus in midfield this summer and that should spark a move for Corentin Tolisso. The Frenchman is out of contract.
Liverpool could see several players leave the club this summer. The number of contracts expiring in 2023 is surprisingly high, while James Milner’s expires at the end of this month.
And while much attention has been on the expiring deals upfront, Liverpool also face exits in midfield. Milner isn’t the only one – both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have just one more season remaining. While they could renew, they haven’t yet and that could spark an exodus.
Losing all three players would have a dramatic effect on the squad. They’re essentially Liverpool’s rotation players – if they were to leave, the squad would only have first-XI players and youngsters to pick from. When those first-XI players are Jordan Henderson and Thiago – two injury-prone options – it’s particularly scary.
And that’s why we think Liverpool should consider a move for Corentin Tolisso this summer.
A Corentin Tolisso move
Bayern Munich announced on Wednesday that Tolisso will depart the club this summer with the end of his contract. He’s now available on a free transfer – and that’s a wonderful opportunity for someone.
Tolisso is a World Cup-winning midfielder and one who just a few years ago, looked like a potential world-beater. A bad injury, mixed with some struggles on the pitch, halted Tolisso’s rise but the right transfer can get it back on track.
He’s now 27, right in his prime years. Liverpool are exactly the kind of club that can get a player back to their best. And if they could do that with Tolisso, they’d get an elite midfielder who’s capable of just about everything in the middle of the park.
They wouldn’t need to pay a transfer fee, either – something that’s particularly important as they’ll need to replace Sadio Mané this summer. It would leave the door open to another midfield signing, too, while creating a bridge between the experienced starters and the inexperienced youngsters.
If Liverpool are left with a gaping hole in their midfield this summer, Tolisso could be the ideal player to fill it.
