'Major economic problems': Bayern's reported plan to sign Sadio Mané appears to have hit a wall

Bayern Munich may have run into a problem in their reported Sadio Mané plan. The Bavarians need to manage some moving parts.

It appears likely that Sadio Mané joins Bayern Munich this summer. That’s the talk out of just about every outlet, anyway – as explained by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg over the weekend.

And there’s an obvious role for Mané, too. Robert Lewandowski wants to leave the club for Barcelona and the Senegal star can slot in nicely as the main man at Bayern.

It’s something we expected as soon as Lewandowski voiced a desire to leave. Everything makes sense for everyone involved.

Unless, of course, Lewandowski doesn’t leave.

And that’s where the hiccup comes in here. La Liga president Javier Tebas was talking about Barcelona this week and explained that they still have ‘major economic problems’, per Mundo Deportivo.

He says that the Catalonians can’t actually sign Lewandowski and still meet the league’s financial rules. They’ll have to sell someone – at least one – before funding a move for the Pole.

Bayern’s Sadio Mané plan

Bayern are not a club that pays massive wages en masse. We can’t imagine that they’d fund a move for Mané, then, unless Lewandowski departs and frees up some money.

But they need Barcelona to actually buy the player first – easier said than done. The money just isn’t there right now they’ll have to raise it out of desperation. All buying teams know this and we can’t imagine they’ll get full-value offers.

As for Liverpool, it’s difficult to judge this one. On the one hand, we don’t want Mané to leave and anything that stops that is a good thing. On the other, the Reds can’t move for a replacement until they know he’s off. The worst case here is that Mané doesn’t actually leave until very late in the transfer window.

This one promises to drag out, then. Just hopefully not for too long – whether it’s good or bad, Liverpool need things sorted ASAP.
