'Phenomenal': Alan Shearer picks Liverpool players in his Team of the Season, including one 'dream' star

Alan Shearer picked five Liverpool players in his Team of the Season for the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp even made it as manager.

Alan Shearer showed his appreciation for Liverpool’s season by naming nearly half of his Team of the Season as Liverpool players. The legendary striker gave his thoughts to the Premier League in a culmination of his weekly Team of the Week.

So here’s the XI in full:

Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Dias, Cancelo, Rice, De Bruye, Silva, Salah, Son, Mané.

Shearer also had some nice things to say about every player and it’s abundantly clear that Liverpool’s players have left an impression on him this season. Trent Alexander-Arnold, in particular, earns the highest praise.

Alan Shearer on his Team of the Season

“The number of players he’s been one-on-one with, and no one could get past him,” Shearer said on Alisson. He’s one of the reasons why Liverpool have achieved what they have this season.”

“A forward’s dream,” is how he described Alexander-Arnold. “The crosses and the chances he has created have just been phenomenal.”

UEFA MUST STOP! NEW CHAMPIONS LEAGUE COULD RUIN FOOTBALL

“It’s no surprise Liverpool struggled without him last season,” he said on Virgil van Dijk. “He’s been a tower defensively again for them.”

“No surprise that I’m going to pick [Mohamed Salah],” said Shearer. “He’s been superb. His goals again have often carried Liverpool at times.”

And last but not least, Sadio Mané: “The year he’s had, internationally and for his club, he’s been absolutely phenomenal. He’s one of the reasons why Liverpool have been fighting on all fronts.”

It’s hard to argue with any of that. These five probably have been the standout stars at the club this season, even if we hold onto a special place for Thiago. An injury-ridden start to the campaign likely takes him out of contention – as does the brilliance of Bernado Silva and Kevin De Bruyne, to be fair.

The PFA Team of the Season should arrive over the next month and we’d expect it to look pretty similar to this. Liverpool should be heavily represented – and that’s fully deserved after a remarkable campaign.
