News that Aurélien Tchouaméni rejects Liverpool should bring about a move for a £31m defensive midfielder. The Reds have options here.
It appears Liverpool won’t sign Aurélien Tchouaméni. The highly-rated French midfielder has a choice between the Reds and Real Madrid but it seems he’ll pick Los Blancos.
It’s certainly a shame. Tchouaméni is a fantastically talented young midfielder and one who would have fitted into the squad nicely. There is a lack of solid defensive players in the Reds’ midfield, after all – Fabinho is largely the only one.
Thus we don’t expect Liverpool to stop there. Tchouaméni might not be on his way but that doesn’t mean they can’t find another talented defensive midfielder to boost this squad.
In fact, it sounds as though they might have the right alternative in mind.
Aurélien Tchouaméni rejects Liverpool
Voetbal International claimed last week that Ibrahim Sangaré is on the shortlist at Anfield. They apparently scouted him on multiple occasions over the final weeks of the season.
Sangaré feels like the natural alternative here. He’s been absolutely fantastic for PSV Eindhoven this season, ticking virtually every box Liverpool would want from a defensive midfielder.
On top of that, he’d apparently cost around £31m. RMC Sport claim Tchouaméni’s eventual fee will be just under £70m before bonuses – so Liverpool might be able to secure a bargain here. At the very least, they’d be taking far less of a risk with Sangaré.
And so this feels like the right direction now. Sangaré would be far cheaper, looks like the right player and Liverpool clearly see something in him. It’s one to watch this summer, certainly.
