Andy Robertson says he’d never heard Anfield as quiet as when he scored Liverpool’s third goal against Wolves yesterday.
Speaking to LFCTV GO, Robertson says he knew there was something strange happening at Anfield due to the quietness that greeted the goal.
“It played a part knowing the fans knew the result,” said Robertson. “I heard a big cheer, I didn’t know if Man City had scored before that, but I knew Villa had obviously scored the equaliser, or made it 2-0 or 2-1 or whatever it was, but obviously the Wolves fans react as well.
“When I’ve scored my goal it’s probably the quietest Anfield’s ever been, I’m thinking something’s not right here!”
The title was pretty much gone at that point. It’s no surprise to hear that the players could feel the deflation of the crowd.
Emotions take over at Anfield
It was a rollercoaster day at Anfield as the crowd struggled to keep their emotions in check. Many would have gone into the day more in hope than expectation that Aston Villa could take something from Manchester City.
That hope soon turned into something much more tangible though. First Matty Cash and then Philippe Coutinho scored for Steven Gerrard’s team.
As a result, the noise and the chaos was turned up a few notches. That seemed to seep onto the pitch. Liverpool looked nervous and rushed as they tried to find a way through a resolute Wolves defence.
By the time Mohamed Salah did manage to put Liverpool ahead in the game, City had already turned 2-0 down into 3-2 up.
Had Liverpool have managed to get the goal earlier on in the game, maybe that tension would have filtered through at the Etihad. Instead, the three City goals made Salah and then Robertson’s goals nothing more than a means to another three points.
Disappointment for the Liverpool fans, and made worse by the fact that at one stage, it was well and truly on. But the travelling Kop will dust themselves off and go again, we’ve got a date in Paris and a score to be settled with the Champions of Spain.
