‘They help us’: Pep Guardiola gives his honest take on Liverpool after the Premier League title race

Pep Guardiola gave his take on Liverpool after Manchester City narrowly beat them to the Premier League title on Sunday. The Reds fell agonisingly short.

Liverpool came ridiculously close to the Premier League title on Sunday with their 3-1 win over Wolves at Anfield. They needed Manchester City to drop points, of course – but that seemed incredibly likely at one stage.

Aston Villa led 2-0 at the Etihad with 15 minutes to play. Somehow, though, they managed to concede three times in five minutes. It’s an all-time capitulation.

City forced that capitulation, of course – and credit to them for that – but Liverpool can’t help but feel the disappointment. It was right there and the Reds went to the limit to try and regain their title.

Pep Guardiola recognised that after the final whistle on Sunday as he spoke to Sky Sports. The Spaniard gave his take on this Liverpool side – one he says is unlike anything he’s seen before.

“The magnitude of your achievement is related to the magnitude of your rival,” said Guardiola. “And our rival? I’ve never seen a team like Liverpool in my life.

“So I know it’s tough but a big congratulations – they help us be a better team season by season.”

It’s nice that Liverpool make City better. We’d argue that being able to spend £100m on Jack Grealish – a player who didn’t even play against Villa – and then drop £200m on Erling Haaland probably plays a bigger part on that, though.

But hey, that’s just the bitterness talking. At the end of the day, Liverpool and City do push one another to incredible heights and the momentum they generate is unbelievable at times.

We’re sure the two of them will do it again next season, too. Until then, we’ll enjoy that Liverpool don’t help City be quite good enough to win the UEFA Champions League final. Roll on Saturday.
