'Wonderful to see': Jurgen Klopp says he witnessed Liverpool do something 'incredible' this week

Jurgen Klopp says he saw something ‘incredible’ from Liverpool vs Southampton in midweek. The boss had to applaud it.

Liverpool head into the final day of the Premier League season with a chance at winning the title. It’s a slim chance – around 18%, according to one analysis – but a chance nonetheless.

Earning that chance wasn’t easy, either. Liverpool needed to win at Southampton on Tuesday, just three days after 120 minutes in the FA Cup against Chelsea. Jurgen Klopp felt he couldn’t call on his best players for the game – he made nine changes for the fixture.

The fact that Liverpool’s squad players managed to step in and win was ‘incredible’, says the Liverpool boss.

“We had to rest players after the FA Cup final, there was no chance of playing close to the same team so it was wonderful to see how the boys dealt with the situation,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“Humankind is like this. They are only human beings and we tend to feel sorry for ourselves thinking we should always deliver in these kinds of situations but the boys really delivered and were incredible.”

Klopp’s right to focus on just how big a performance that was. This was essentially Liverpool’s second team going away in the Premier League to earn three points. That’s an incredible feat, no matter how highly you rate Southampton.

And at the end of the day, this was the only way Liverpool could compete as they are this season. They’ve won two trophies already, after all, and could lift two more. There’s the Premier League, of course, and the Champions League after that – no one has ever gone this far in all four competitions.

It’s impossible to do so without trusting the entirety of your squad. Liverpool had to rest players after the FA Cup final but Klopp knew he could. The depth at the club right now is stronger than ever and it’s put the Reds in position to make history.

Now let’s see what happens on Sunday – Klopp may even call on that depth once again.
