'Will need to': Rio Ferdinand shares which player he thinks will have to 'step up' if Salah leaves Liverpool

Rio Ferdinand thinks that Luis Diaz will have to start scoring more goals if Mohamed Salah leaves Liverpool.

Asked about the prospect of Salah leaving The Reds on his FIVE YouTube Channel, Ferdinand said he’d be looking for Diaz to ‘step up’ in-front of goal if it happened.

“If you lose Salah you’re losing a guaranteed 30 plus goals a season, that’s where Diaz will need to step up,” he said.

“In terms of excitement, enjoyment, watching him, he is top, top, top. He’s scoring but not the Salah rate, that’s the difference.

“What happens normally when a player like Salah, that big, if he left, then it’s about other people stepping up.”

Hopefully that isn’t a scenario that Liverpool will have to deal with in the near future. Regardless, it wouldn’t hurt for Diaz to work on being a little more clinical in-front of goal.

More goals on the menu for Diaz

Luis Diaz has been a revelation for Liverpool, there’s no two ways about it. His speed and trickery have caught the imagination of every Reds fan and have helped propel the club to the brink of history.

The one thing that has been lacking just a touch so far is more tangible end-product. For anyone who didn’t watch Diaz, and only looked at his stats, they’d maybe think some of the praise towards him was over the top.

Six goals and four assists in 24 games are decent numbers. But he has missed opportunities for Liverpool, and could easily have had double on both counts.

Of course, there are no stats that can really do justice to the sheer panic that he causes defences practically every time he sets off towards them. His directness and tenacity create openings for Liverpool whether they lead to a goal or not.

The Colombian has deserved every little bit of praise that has come his way.

More goals will be on the menu for next season though, whether Salah leaves Liverpool or, hopefully, not.
