'If I would have known': Jurgen Klopp told Thiago he wishes he'd signed him 'four years earlier'

Jurgen Klopp told Thiago that he didn’t quite realise ‘what a player’ he is after seeing the Spaniard shine for Liverpool. The Reds won the FA Cup with his help.

Liverpool won the FA Cup on Saturday to essentially complete Jurgen Klopp’s collection of major trophies. All that you can really argue is missing is the Community Shield – so we’ll see about that in August.

This was a tough game against Chelsea, though. Liverpool started incredibly brightly but couldn’t force a goal with their early dominance. As it turned out, no one could force a goal at either end across 120 minutes of football.

It went to penalties, much like the EFL Cup final, where Kostas Tsimikas and Alisson combined to take the trophy to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp was understandably in great spirits after the game. The German raved about virtually every Liverpool player but a certain few got special praise.

Thiago was one of those, with Klopp sharing an admission he told the Spaniard once the game was over. He didn’t quite realise how good Thiago was, it seems.

“After the game I said to Thiago, if I would have known what a player you are, I would have signed you four years earlier,” said Klopp, per Liverpoolfc.com. “He said, ‘You taught me running!’

“I take that, it’s fine. He could obviously already play football pretty well but he learned running in Liverpool, that’s fine.”

Thiago the Liverpool player

It’s crazy to think of all the doubts that surrounded Thiago on his arrival at Anfield. The midfielder was too slow on the ball, according to many, and wouldn’t be able to play Liverpool’s pressing game.

It was all absolute nonsense.

Thiago has been sensational for Liverpool and this season he’s been one of the best midfielders in the world. We’re honestly not sure we’d swap him for anyone.

He was always going to play a key role at Wembley against Chelsea, too, and finished the game with 108 touches, two key passes, three tackles and four headers. Thiago did just about everything.

A sensational player and one we wish had been at the club the last four years, too. We’ll just have to make the most of him while he’s here.
