Journalist's claim means Liverpool fans will be sweating until the end of the season on star players' contracts

Liverpool have reportedly put all contract talks on hold despite several players coming to the end of their deals. This will have the fans sweating.

Theo Squires of the Liverpool Echo claims all contract talks at Liverpool are on hold right now – even with star players. That’s because the club wants to focus entirely on delivering more silverware this month.

The Reds can feasibly win the FA Cup, Premier League and UEFA Champions League in the next couple of weeks. It would be the biggest achievement in their illustrious history and perfection is required (along with Manchester City slipping up).

“All contract negotiations are on hold until the summer at the moment as Liverpool focus on winning some trophies,” wrote Squires in a Q and A session.

It’s a sensible stance, of course. Winning trophies is far more important than securing new contracts for players and Liverpool know that. But it’s still a stance that will have fans sweating this month.

Liverpool stall on player contracts

Liverpool have five first-team players with contracts expiring in 2023. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino are unquestionably the biggest names – they’ve been the backbone of the Reds over this incredibly successful period.

Naby Keita is another, though, and his form this season means he’s almost certainly getting an offer. He’ll want a big one, too, in what is likely his last major contract.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future isn’t anywhere near as clear. He’s not playing often at all, despite some good performances of his own at times this season.

James Milner is actually the most pressing contract, though. His expires at the end of next month – Liverpool need to get on that quick if they want another year of the veteran midfielder.

But it’s Salah, Mané and Firmino who will have the fans sweating. The thought of any leaving is a strange one and yet it seems likely that at least one will. All three is surely out of the question but until those contract talks resume, anything seems possible.

It’s going to be an interesting month, that’s for sure.
