Liverpool have five first-team players with contracts expiring in 2023. Here are what we think the Reds should do with all five.
Five Liverpool players enter the final year of their contracts this summer as they’ll expire in 2023 – there are going to be some big decisions. The Reds could kick-off something of a squad revamp, if they so wished. They could also renew all five and go for continuity, of course.
So here are all five and what we believe Liverpool should do.
Mohamed Salah
Here’s the big one. Mohamed Salah’s contract has been the off-pitch focus at Liverpool all season and continues to do so. In fact, the player recently admitted that things are ‘tough’ right now with all the distractions.
Now, we don’t actually need to debate this one much. Liverpool want to renew Salah’s contract and, per the Mirror, offered him £400,000 a week. If he accepts it, that’s that. If he doesn’t, we imagine the Reds will keep him around for another strong year before parting ways.
Sadio Mané
A slightly tougher one as Mané hasn’t quite performed at Salah’s level. We’d hate to see him leave and Liverpool should offer a new deal – but it’s not going to be £400k per week.
So the short of it is ‘offer a new contract’ and if the parties can’t come to terms, then Liverpool will surely look for suitors this summer. Goal claim there are plenty of suitors. The Reds can cover Mané’s place in the squad, after all, and getting money for him makes sense.
But first and foremost, we want a new contract.
Roberto Firmino
Now, Firmino isn’t actually in Liverpool’s first XI anymore – and that makes this one interesting. The Brazilian is essentially irreplaceable as his skillset is so unique, though, and that’s why we lean towards offering a new contract.
Firmino isn’t a player who relies on his pace, so we imagine he can play well into his 30s at a high level. It just depends on his own belief. Liverpool just aren’t giving their no.9 a first-team place right now and Firmino would have to settle for more of a bit-part role in any new deal.
We really hope he gets it, though, as Firmino truly is one of a kind.
Naby Keita
This one is so unpredictable. Keita is now in the prime of his career and his talent should bring a big contract. His inconsistent performances, however, make it questionable whether Liverpool will offer it.

There’s also the fact that Keita has never established a first-XI place. Without that, Liverpool are never going to offer him the kind of money their stars are on.
Still, we believe Liverpool should offer Keita a new deal, probably on similar money as now and below that top bracket. If he signs that, then great. But will he settle for second-best over his prime years? If the answer is no, it’ll be time to cash-in this summer.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Oxlade-Chamberlain is the only player we’ll say shouldn’t get that contract offer. Not because he isn’t good enough but because Liverpool have so much talent coming through in midfield. Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott will both want more games in midfield next season, while Fabio Carvalho could arrive, too.
The 28-year-old just isn’t playing often enough this season, either. It does feel like time to move on this summer, with Liverpool looking to get a fee for the player. Oxlade-Chamberlain has had his moments this season where he’s looked first-class but it doesn’t appear to be enough for regular football at Anfield.
