Klopp recalls 'outstanding' defender and makes five other changes: Liverpool's predicted XI vs Villa

Liverpool take on Aston Villa this evening as they aim to get their title challenge back on track.

The Reds travel to Villa Park for an 8pm kick-off in the West Midlands having fallen three points behind Manchester City at the weekend.

Jurgen Klopp will have an FA Cup final in his mind as he makes his selection to take on a team put out by Reds legend Steven Gerrard’s.

Here’s how we thinks Liverpool will line up.

Klopp will potentially rotate throughout the team tonight, but that won’t apply to Alisson Becker.

The four faces in-front of Alisson may change considerably though. Trent Alexander-Arnold looked weary in his crossing as the night wore on at Anfield on Saturday. He should be given a rest with Joe Gomez returning in his place.

Joel Matip looks certain to start at centre-back having sat out of the last two games. Matip has been great this season, even called ‘outstanding’ by Garth Crooks for BBC Sport. He’ll partner the virtually ever-present Virgil Van Dijk at Villa Park.

At left-back, this game looks like a good one to give Andy Robertson a rest. Kostas Tsimikas will likely do a fine job as the Scot takes a breather.

The Liverpool midfield looked a little dogged against Tottenham and Klopp should refresh it here. Fabinho won’t be one of those to sit out though.

Making up the other two from the midfield is slightly tricky given the importance of both tonight and Saturday’s game at Wembley.

But we think Klopp will turn to Naby Keita and James Milner to complete a slightly unfamiliar looking trio. With Thiago and Jordan Henderson on the bench, there’ll be plenty of scope to change it if need be.

Up-front Liverpool should be able to call upon the fit again Roberto Firmino, but there’s no need to risk him here.

Instead, Diogo Jota should be given another chance to show why he should start for Liverpool in the upcoming finals.

Flanking him will likely be Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

There’s a train of thought that insists Luis Diaz start every game between now and the end of the season. But the Colombian has played more football than any other player in The Reds squad this season.

We need him fit for the biggest games and right now, the bigger game between tonight and Saturday is probably against Chelsea at Wembley.
