Report: 21-year-old has leapfrogged Liverpool teammate by impressing in training, now set for talks

Liverpool have taken a surprising stance on Rhys Williams after the 21-year-old’s performances since returning from his loan. The centre-back has an Anfield future, it seems.

This comes from the Liverpool Echo. They claim that Liverpool will sit down with Rhys Williams for talks this summer with the hope that he’ll extend his future with the club.

Williams, who turned 21 in February, spent the first half of this season on loan at Swansea City. That didn’t quite work out, though, and he returned to Anfield for the second half.

And Liverpool like what they’ve seen. They’re apparently impressed with Williams both in training and through his performances for the Under 23s. Now they’d like to keep him around as a genuine option.

This would come at the expense of Nat Phillips, of course. Phillips just earned promotion to the Premier League while on loan with Bournemouth and Liverpool will likely try to sell him this summer.

Williams will step up as the Reds’ fifth-choice centre-back. He’s now the favourite for that role and Phillips no longer has a genuine spot at the club. If those talks go well, that is.

Rhys Williams and his Liverpool future

We do know that Liverpool rate Williams highly. Jurgen Klopp named him as one of the strongest players he’s ever left out of his first-team squad just last month, in fact.

And everyone saw what he can offer with his superb performances a year ago. The then-20-year-old stepped into the first XI to help Liverpool secure Champions League football. Doing that at such a young age was a more impressive feat than Williams perhaps got credit for – the club recognised it, though.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip both in their 30s, there is a long-term future for Williams if he continues to develop and impress. We’ll just have to see if he’s up for that this summer.
