Report: AC Milan close in on £20m deal for long-term Liverpool target - Reds have moved onto bigger things

AC Milan are nearing a deal for long-term Liverpool target Renato Sanches, according to reports. The Reds appear to have others in mind.

This comes from CalcioMercato. They claim that AC Milan have an agreement in principle for Lille midfielder Renato Sanches. With bonuses, it’s a deal that could cost them £20m.

Milan have tracked the Portuguese star for some time now and it appears they finally have their man. Not that they were the only club tracking Sanches.

Fabrizio Romano suggested Liverpool wanted Sanches as recently as February. Their interest actually dates back further than that – reports in December 2020 had the Reds down as suitors.

But it appears Liverpool aren’t in this race anymore and Sanches is destined for Milan. Perhaps that’s because their attention is elsewhere this summer.

Liverpool won’t sign Renato Sanches

For what it’s worth, we wrote back in 2020 that Sanches would be a fine signing. A risky one, certainly, but Liverpool have previous for taking on players who haven’t quite hit their absolute best and squeezing the potential out of them.

Now, however, it seems Liverpool have bigger plans.

Goal, along with other outlets, claim Liverpool want a midfielder this season. The Times are one of of those saying similar – that Aurélien Tchouaméni is on their shortlist, as is Jude Bellingham.

Those are two of the world’s absolute best young midfielders and Liverpool’s interest is them firmly shopping on the top floor. It suggest they’re not after a project player like Sanches but instead want to deliver an elite prospect who can become one of the world’s absolute best.

And it’s certainly a plan we’re on board with. Bellingham, in particular, looks like a dream signing and we believe he could be Liverpool’s first £100m signing.

While Sanches would be a good signing, Liverpool appear ready for the next level.
