Report: Liverpool now have an understanding with key man that he can leave in the last year of his contract

Liverpool have an agreement with Jurgen Klopp that he can choose not to fulfil the final year of his new contract with the club.

That’s per The Athletic, who claim that the Liverpool boss does not have a break clause in the deal which runs until 2026.

Instead, there is reportedly an ‘understanding’ between Klopp and the club that he can leave Liverpool if he ‘doesn’t want to do the final year.’

It’s claimed that if the manager ‘feels wanted’, though, he will see out the 2025/26 season before departing. Finally, there is reportedly nothing in Klopp’s contract which allows him to leave for ‘other clubs or the national team.’

The best news for Liverpool fans

It’s the news that every Liverpool fan was desperate to hear. Nobody wanted to see Jurgen leave Anfield in 2024.

Although his previous end-date was still over two years away, it felt like the clock had slowly started to tick towards to his dreaded departure.

Successors were being mooted and questions being asked whether potential targets would still be convinced to join the club.

All of that talk has now been shelved for another four years at least. Liverpool can now move forward safe in the knowledge that the very best manager in the world, and his coaches, will oversee it all.

Hopefully progress can continue to the point where Klopp feels he can carry on even beyond 2026. If a scenario develops where he feels the year before that is the right time to leave, then things may have gone stale.

For now though, Liverpool fans can celebrate what has been an unbelievable couple of weeks. After beating Manchester City to reach the FA Cup final, The Reds then dispatched their two biggest rivals – Everton and Manchester United – without conceding a goal.

Now, they have one foot in the Champions League final and the man responsible for it all has committed his future to the club.

All we need now is to see Jordan Henderson lift those three trophies, and Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to take their manager’s lead and sign their futures up to Liverpool.

That’s not too much to ask now, is it?
