Liverpool player Klopp calls 'world-class' won an incredible six tackles against Everton, made 100% of them

Joel Matip put in a defensive display to remember for Liverpool against Everton on Sunday afternoon. The defender was an absolute rock.

Liverpool had to work for it but they beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield. This was a tough game, though, and one that saw the Toffees force the Reds into risks.

That was largely because the first half was terrible – neither side had a shot on target. Liverpool came out willing to press higher and lift the tempo in the second, though. Jurgen Klopp made a double substitution that moved his side into a 4-2-4 formation.

That, of course, brought those risks. Liverpool looked far more vulnerable on the counter-attack as they moved numbers forward, with Everton driving with pace into the Reds’ half.

Klopp needed his defenders to be on their game, then. Fortunately, they were and Joel Matip, in particular, shone for Liverpool here.

The headline stat here is that Matip attempted six tackles in this game – no one on the pitch attempted more for either side. Incredibly, he won every single one.

That’s made even more amazing when you consider that Matip’s season-high before his game was three. He doubled it here and at a 100% success rate. It just doesn’t get more defensively dominant than that.

And while Matip wasn’t asked to make any interceptions across the 90, he did make two clearances to cap his performance at the back. He was reliable on the ball, too, with 90 passes made at an 89% rate.

Matip is a player Klopp considers to be ‘world-class’ and performances like this are exactly why. The dominance, the consistency, and being able to deliver the exact display necessary separate merely good centre-backs from great ones.

That’s what we saw here as the Liverpool star continues a fantastic season at the back.
