'Especially with my history': Liverpool player applauds Klopp's 'great' use of his teammate this season

Joel Matip is a big fan of how one Liverpool teammate has been used this season. The centre-back is enjoying his football.

Joel Matip is having a fantastic season once again for Liverpool in a campaign where he’s actually staying fit. That’s been a massive problem for the defender, who frequently sees his momentum interrupted with problems here and there.

Last season was the worst of it, however. Liverpool needed Matip to stay fit as both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez suffered season-ending injuries. He was out himself by the end of January, though – a disaster at Anfield.

That prompted Liverpool to dip into the transfer market and bring in Ibrahima Konate. The Frenchman has been a revelation, too, and playing well beyond his years.

Konate has been the principal alternative to Matip, allowing Jurgen Klopp to rest his more senior centre-back. And that’s something Matip himself applauds.

“[Konate] did it great, so no reason why he should not play also too, he told Sky Sports. “Especially with my history of injuries, it also fitted quite good with my situation.”

The rotation with Konate is getting the best out of both players and it’s fantastic to see. The 22-year-old plays in some important games as an alternative, earning vital experience that only improves him further.

Matip, on the other hand, gets rest when he needs it and that’s causing him to thrive. He’s playing his best football since 2019, in our estimation, even earning the Premier League Player of the Month award for February.

But this has been a hallmark of Liverpool’s season. Jurgen Klopp has managed his squad to perfection, taking advantage of the greatest strength in depth that the club has ever had.

We’re seeing brilliant performances from both first-choice starters and squad players in just about every position. Matip and Konate’s displays might be the best example of that, though, with the blend of experience and youth working to perfection.
