Pep Guardiola makes Liverpool prediction as Manchester City return to Premier League summit

Pep Guardiola made a prediction about Liverpool after his Manchester City side returned to the top of the Premier League. The Reds had 24 hours at the summit.

It was fun while it lasted. Liverpool are back into second place after Manchester City beat Brighton 3-0 on Wednesday evening. The Reds at least had 24 hours on top spot after their 4-0 demolition of Manchester United the day before.

But this was always likely, of course. City and Liverpool will spend the next six games under pressure, knowing they need to match each other’s results. They also know that they probably will match those results – it could honestly be one slip in the 12 games that decides this race.

Pep Guardiola certainly sees the tension in the race as he talked to reporters after the Brighton game. He had a prediction about Liverpool over the rest of the season and it means tough times are ahead for his City team.

“We know what we have to do,” he said, per Simon Stone. “It is not complicated. Liverpool are going to win all the games.”

This kind of sweet talk has become normal in the ‘rivalry’, of course. Guardiola also described Liverpool as one of the best football teams ever, for good measure.

“We are facing one of the best teams ever, of everything,” he said, per Mark Critchley. “The players know it, I know it.

“It’s a pity because the game we played against them here we were better than them and deserved to win. Unfortunately, we could not do it, but I would not change much.”

Pep Guardiola predicts Liverpool to win every game

It’s an incredibly tough title race to call but people are having a go. As for Guardiola, he pretty much has to work under the impression that Liverpool will win every remaining fixture.

There’s a very good chance that they do just that, after all. Liverpool boast the necessary squad depth to compete in both the Premier League and Champions League, where it’s questionable whether City do right now. Their lack of firepower up top may come back to hurt them at some point.

Thus Guardiola knows full well that City can’t let up and mustn’t believe that any slip will be made up by Liverpool. As for the Reds, they can only focus on themselves.

They need City to slip up but can’t control that themselves anymore. All Jurgen Klopp and co. can do is deliver in every match. They’ll certainly do that, of course, and possibly prove Guardiola right.
