‘It’s off the charts’: Souness can’t wrap his head around what’s happening behind the scenes at Liverpool

Graeme Souness says Liverpool are ‘off the charts’ right now with what they’re doing behind the scenes. It’s impossible to disagree.

Liverpool toyed with Manchester United last night as they walked to a 4-0 win at Anfield. That’s 9-0 over the two games this season, then – what more can you ask for?

The Reds moved to the top of the Premier League table with that result, too. It’s the first time they ended the day there since October, firmly putting pressure on Manchester City in the title race. Pep Guardiola’s side will attempt to answer them tonight.

Liverpool are simply flying on the pitch, though. The Premier League is one of three competitions they’re competing in, having already won the EFL Cup. It’s unprecedented and the potential is there for a very, very special season.

But while it’s easy to put it down to how good things are on the pitch – and the coaching of Jurgen Klopp – Liverpool are just as fantastic off it. Their recruitment, in particular, has been virtually perfect over the last few years and that’s something former captain Graeme Souness wants to point out.

Graeme Souness on Liverpool

“Liverpool’s recruitment this time around – the last seven or eight years – has been off the charts,” he told Sky Sports.

“They’re either having the most incredible amount of luck with signings, because no one gets them all right, or their recruitment is so good that it’s off the charts.”

It certainly has been off the charts and we can’t remember another club ever having this kind of record. Every player Liverpool sign comes in to do the job they wanted them for. From star signings like Thiago to squad players like Kostas Tsimikas.

Even Naby Keita – the only one who hasn’t quite lived up to his price tag – still delivers in massive games to play his part in their success. You can genuinely argue that the signings have been perfect.

And that’s been as big a piece of Liverpool’s success as anything.
