‘In my opinion’: Jose Enrique claims there’s only one Manchester City player who would actually start for Liverpool

Former Liverpool player Jose Enrique has claimed that Kevin De Bruyne is the only Manchester City player who would get into Jurgen Klopp’s team.

Speaking to Sky Sports about whether his old club can win the quadruple, Enrique stated his belief that Liverpool have a stronger team than City.

“I think for the first time I’m going to say that Liverpool’s squad is stronger than Man City’s, in my opinion,” said Enrique. “I think in every position, apart from Kevin De Bruyne, I would not change any of the starting line-up players from Liverpool.”

That’s certainly a bold claim from the ever-forthright Enrique.

The best in the league

Of course it can never happen, but imagine how good De Bruyne would be in this Liverpool team.

It’s pretty inarguable that the Belgian would instantly command a spot in Klopp’s best eleven. Since Mohamed Salah’s dip in form around the turn of the year, De Bruyne has comfortably been the best player in the Premier League.

Before limping off against Atletico Madrid last Wednesday, the 30-year-old had scored in four games in a row in all competitions.

That included his slightly fortuitous strike against The Reds to open the scoring on April 10th. It was the second time this season that he’s used Joel Matip’s leg as a useful prop on his way to bagging against Liverpool.

A little lucky it may have been, but how Liverpool could sometimes use a midfielder who can strike at goal from distance. In European football, there aren’t many who do that as well as De Bruyne.

His absence for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final no doubt gave Liverpool a boost.

Liverpool dreams for De Bruyne

It seems that had Liverpool been in the right place at the right time, a move could well have happened.

That’s because as revealed by the man himself in 2019, he’s actually a boyhood Liverpool fan who idolised Michael Owen.

Unfortunately, it’s too late for most of us to fulfil our childhood ambitions and emulate Owen by excelling for The Reds. There could still be time for De Bruyne though. Come on Kevin, you know you want to!
