Player Klopp sold at Liverpool now takes dig at Everton after their defeat last night

Jose Enrique has taken a swipe at Everton by photoshopping himself onto a Burnley kit after The Blues defeat yesterday.

The former Liverpool defender last played for The Reds in 2016 before being let go by Jurgen Klopp. But he’s clearly still a fan of the club, posting the crudely edited photo on Twitter after Everton lost 3-2 at Turf Moor.

“Fan of Burnley this season as well,” Enrique wrote alongside the picture.

The incredibly amateur nature of the editing job will only serve to rub salt into Everton wounds.

Merseyside Derby looms larger than ever

Everton’s loss away at Burnley was an absolutely crushing blow for their hopes of staying the Premier League. Having taken the lead in the game with a couple of Richarlison penalties, Everton allowed Burnley to turn the game around.

The result leaves The Blues just a single point ahead of the drop-zone with nine games to play.

One of those games is of course the Merseyside Derby at Anfield. Coming on the 24th April, it will be Everton’s 32nd and Liverpool’s 33rd game of the season. It’s difficult to remember a derby where so much is riding on it at this stage of the season.

Occasionally Liverpool have been pushing for the title or a vital Champions League spot. But at the same time Everton are usually coasting towards the end of the season by now. There’s usually nothing but bragging rights on the line for them.

This time is totally different. The result could well be the difference between Liverpool winning or losing the title and Everton staying up or going down.

Righting last season’s wrongs

Without the crowd present last year, Everton won at Anfield for the first time since 1999. It was one of the worst moments of a difficult campaign.

Liverpool have done a sterling job of wiping away some of the dismal memories that last season brought. Along with the added edge of being a crucial game, Klopp’s team will want to absolutely put last February’s result right here.

The Reds have so many big games coming up between now and the end of the season. As ever though, the Merseyside Derby has a big red ring around it as one of the biggest on the calendar.
