Aurélién Tchouaméni is Liverpool’s best-possible signing to fix their upcoming midfield problem. The Frenchman is ‘extraordinary’.
Liverpool are building a remarkable squad right now. They’ve got incredible quality all over the pitch – elite players who have won the lot and sit in the prime of their careers.
But there are also so many wonderful young players still developing. Even Trent Alexander-Arnold, a bonafide superstar, is only 23. The likes of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, too, will play at the top level for years to come.
So even when this current side breaks apart, Liverpool have stars to carry over into the next generation. There should be a lot of success for a long time to come.
However, there is one area where things are a problem – defensive midfield. Liverpool only really count on Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to play there and lack solid options for the future. In fact, their best young midfielders – Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott – are both very attack-minded.
Fabinho turns 29 in October and Henderson is already on the wrong side of 30. These aren’t players to rely on for give years, even if we imagine the Brazilian still has many years left in him.
Thus if Liverpool want to secure their future, they’ll almost certainly need a new defensive midfielder. And we’ve got just the one in mind.
Aurélién Tchouaméni for Liverpool
Marca report that Liverpool want Aurélién Tchouaméni from AS Monaco. They’ve made their first moves towards him, in fact, along with Real Madrid. And there’s a sense that the player might wait a year before moving on – if Real get their way.
We think that actually suits Liverpool, too. There are so many midfielders already at the club and signing someone in 2023 to replace a 33-year-old Henderson makes a lot of sense.

And Tchouaméni is a player worth waiting for. He’s had a sensational rise over the last 18 months, from a decent youth player into one of the world’s premier defensive midfielders. Someone Paul Pogba says is ‘extraordinary’ and starts for France in a Nations League final.
We’ve written before that Tchouaméni is a magnificent player and one Liverpool should watch. If the Reds do want to secure the next piece of their future world-beaters then we see no better signing.
The timing of 2023 looks perfect, his talent is undeniable and he’s still only 22. Tchouaméni could be at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield for years to come.
