Liverpool are in the mix for Aurelian Tchouameni, according to reports. So just how good is the 21-year-old midfielder?
Marca claims Liverpool are one of several elite clubs looking at Aurelian Tchouameni. The midfielder is currently at AS Monaco but may be on the move soon.
It would cost a lot to sign the player, however. Marca say around £50m would tempt Monaco but not even guarantee a signing.
So how good is Tchouameni and can he justify that price?
Who is Aurelien Tchouameni?
Tchouameni is a 21-year-old defensive midfielder who exploded into the public eye last season. Having never played more than 15 Ligue 1 games in a season, the youngster featured in 36 – starting them all.
It ended up being a very impressive season, too, as Monaco finished third. Tchouameni stood out, in particular. He made the Ligue 1 Team of the Year as well as picking up the Young Player of the Year award.
It was all enough to earn a France call-up in August this year. Most notably, the midfielder started alongside Paul Pogba in the Nations League final as France beat Spain.
So how good is Tchoumeni?
Very. As the awards and France call-up show, Tchoumeni has quickly proven that he can do things few young players can.
For instance, the 21-year-old averaged 3.5 tackles per game in Ligue 1 last season. That was third-best in the league but both players above Tchouameni were at least five years older.
In fact, the only other player under 25 in the top 10 was 18-year-old Eduardo Camavinga, who moved to Real Madrid this summer. His numbers don’t really get anywhere near Tchouameni’s, though.
On top of that, the Monaco man averaged 1.7 interceptions per game. He also chipped in with two goals and three assists.
Encouragingly, Tchouameni is keeping up this form already in 2021/22. He’s averaging around three tackles and two interceptions but has bumped up his passing from 82% completed to 88%.
So all in all, Tchouameni is a very, very talented young midfielder who appears to be developing rapidly. That £50m could end up looking like a complete bargain for anyone willing to take a chance on him.
