Luis Diaz has begun English lessons in an attempt to better communicate with his new teammates at Liverpool.
That’s according to The Athletic, who report that Diaz is ‘seeking to address’ the language barrier which currently exists.
Jurgen Klopp is mentioned by name as someone who the Colombian is looking to improve communication with.
The Liverpool boss has mentioned several times that he has found it difficult to get his ideas fully across to Diaz since his January move from Porto.
But Diaz is now taking steps to solve this issue. Hopefully we’ll start to see an even bigger understanding of what Klopp expects from his player now put into action on the pitch.
Klopp’s Spanish struggles
One man who will be delighted that his player will begin to get a better grasp of English is Klopp himself.
Last month, the German aired his frustration at not being able to get his ideas fully across to Diaz.
“With Luis, for obvious reasons, there is a language issue with me. I do not speak Spanish and he does not speak English. He is learning. I am not learning so we will have to wait until his English gets better,” Klopp told Sky Sports.
Klopp also referred to the situation ahead of the game against Benfica last week.
Klopp was asked whether Diaz had been able to give him any tips on the Portuguese side’s strengths and weaknesses. Jurgen joked that the 25-year-old had tried, but he hadn’t understood him.
“He tried, ten minutes long but I didn’t understand a word, no,” Klopp said via Liverpool FC on YouTube.
Diaz ready to take it up a notch
For the boss to speak so publicly a couple of times about Diaz’s lack of English shows just how important communication is to him.
Klopp’s ideas about how he wants his players to play are specific and detailed. It’s credit to Diaz that he has been able to take so much on board without being able to fully interact with his manager.
Klopp clearly loves the attributes of his player. He called him ‘exceptional’ via Blood Red: Liverpool FC on YouTube early into Diaz’s Liverpool career.
If he can get even better once he can fully interact with his surroundings, then we’re in for a treat.
