Reported Liverpool target Gleison Bremer has become the first player in Europe’s top five leagues to record 100 interceptions.
As reported by Squawka on Twitter, and corroborated by statistics from Fotmob, Bremer has cut out 100 passes from opponents.
Bremer hit the landmark during another impressive showing for Torino last night. The Brazilian played the full 90 minutes as La Granata held title-chasing AC Milan to a 0-0 draw.
It is impressive stuff from a player who looks set to be in-demand this summer.
Liverpool chasing Bremer
According to reports from Goal last week, Liverpool are one of the sides interested in signing Bremer in the off-season.
The Reds are reported to have made ‘informal enquiries’ for the player, who is claimed to be valued around £21m.
That sounds like a reasonable price for a player who has a burgeoning reputation. At 25-years-old, Bremer has time to improve even further and looks to have all the physical tools to be a success in the Premier League.
He is also a big fan of Virgil Van Dijk. Last week, Bremer named the Liverpool man as one of his role-models at centre-back.
How he compares with Liverpool’s defence
Although an impressive statistic from Bremer, some perspective can be gained from looking at the same stat for Liverpool players.
Van Dijk has played marginally more minutes than the Torino man this season. In that time, Virgil has made a relatively paltry 27 interceptions. Joel Matip is slightly more active in this respect having made 37 interceptions of his own.
In Premier League terms though, Bremer is way out ahead. According to premierleague.com, Southampton’s Mohammed Salisu leads the way with 70 interceptions. 13 ahead of Brentford’s Christian Norgaard in second, but still a full 30 behind Bremer.
Rather than any indication of an underperformance from the Liverpool players, this is simply a reflection of The Reds dominance during their games.
Torino are sitting pretty in 11th place in Serie A, an improvement on recent seasons. More impressively though is their defensive stability.
The side from Turin have the fifth best record in the league having conceded 30 goals from 31 games. Bremer has been a massive part of that having started 29 of those matches.
The Brazilian is obviously a player who can operate at a higher level than he currently is. Liverpool look to be one of the interested parties. Let’s see where he ends up.
