‘We’ll be watching out for it’: Foden says Liverpool do something that can really hurt Manchester City

Manchester City star Phil Foden says Liverpool have an element to their game that can really hurt his side. The Reds go to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Liverpool travel to Manchester tomorrow for the biggest game of their Premier League season against Manchester City. Win at the Etihad Stadium and the Reds will be title favourites – something that seemed impossible a couple of months ago.

But Jurgen Klopp has his side in fantastic, consistent form. They’re competing on three fronts still, after all, having already captured the EFL Cup. Liverpool will feel confident against City.

And they should do. The Reds carry a lot of threat and City star Phil Foden sees it. He explained to Sky Sports this week that they’re watching out for Liverpool’s counter-attack, in particular.

“They can catch you off guard,” said Foden. “Say we’re pressing, they can definitely just put the balls over the top unexpectedly.

“So that’s a threat they have and one we’ll be watching out for.”

Manchester City vs Liverpool

That counter-attack is undoubtedly Liverpool’s biggest threat. The passing in the side, combined with the incredible speed up top, makes it virtually impossible to stop.

And that’s why nearly every team in the world sits so deep against Liverpool. Push up and you leave yourself vulnerable to that pace and precision. Sit back and the Reds need to find another way to get in on goal.

But ‘nearly’ is the key word there. City are one of the very few teams that will sit deep against Liverpool and instead looks to press up against the Reds. As Foden says, that does potentially leave them a little vulnerable and has done in the past.

So it’ll be interesting to see what Pep Guardiola does tomorrow. At the end of the day, a draw puts the title race in their hands – he may not be feeling quite as aggressive as Jurgen Klopp. The German, for what it’s worth, fully expects a back-and-forth game with two teams attacking space.

We’ll see if City allow him to get that.
