Liverpool are willing to make Mohamed Salah their top earner by paying him in excess of £300,000 per week.
That’s according to 90min who claim that The Reds and Salah’s camp are ‘still some way apart’ in their valuation of what the Egyptian should be paid.
The report claims that a ‘fresh approach’ has been made by Liverpool. This reportedly ‘presents positives’ in the fact that Salah’s agents have not yet walked away from discussions.
However a deal is still yet to be reached. In fact, 90min claim that the agreement could still take some time and that it is ‘not on the horizon.’ Liverpool reportedly ‘won’t go as high’ as £400,000 per week for Mo.
Furthermore, Real Madrid are named as an interested party should Liverpool fail to reach a positive conclusion with Salah. Barcelona are another club reportedly monitoring the situation.
Form is temporary
Due to Salah’s performances for Liverpool at the start of the season, there were calls from many areas to pay him whatever he was asking for.
However, over the last few months Mo’s form has deteriorated pretty sharply. That isn’t a reflection on his ability, all players go through peaks and troughs. As the old adage goes, form is temporary, class is permanent. That’s as true for Salah as it is of all great players.
But it should also put some perspective into the numbers being talked about.
In the report mentioned, 90min claim that Virgil Van Dijk is currently Liverpool’s top earner on ‘less than’ £250,000 per week.
Liverpool’s current standing in the game dictates that to be a low amount for a star player. However, The Reds have to live within their means. They don’t have the riches that other clubs do and have to be careful not to jeopardise the club’s finances.
A reasonable offer
From a Liverpool point of view, the figure mentioned here seems like a very reasonable amount. There’s every chance that Mo could recapture his early season form and make a higher wage look justifiable, here’s hoping he does.
But with everything in mind, it seems like a positive stance for Liverpool to take. The club should always come first.
Salah’s relationship with the club, the staff and his teammates is excellent. There should be hope that an agreement that suits everyone can be found for that relationship to continue.
But Liverpool have shown in the past that they won’t do anything on any terms other than their own.
