‘You get surprised’: Joe Gomez says Liverpool man’s passing is so good that it catches him off guard

Joe Gomez has hailed Thiago Alcantara’s passing as being so good that it surprises his Liverpool teammates.

Speaking to LFCTV GO (1min 13secs) after Saturday’s win over Watford, Gomez was asked about what it’s like to be on the receiving end of the Spaniard’s passes.

“Sometimes I don’t see them (Thiago’s passes), even if you’re receiving them and you just get surprised that it comes your way,” said Gomez.

“But that’s one of his qualities, I think breaking lines and advancing us, always looking to play a forward pass is one of his top attributes.”

Thankfully more often than not Thiago’s passes are so good that they reach their intended target, whether they were expecting it or not!

Thiago was excellent against Watford. On a day where those around him struggled to hit their usual standards, the 30-year-old was the best player on the pitch.

Perhaps it’s a sign of the benefit of having two full weeks without any travel or competitive football for the midfielder.

He was surprisingly left out of Spain’s latest squad. That meant that he was afforded some time back on Merseyside over the last couple of weeks.

Injury struggles have been a theme of his near two year stay at Liverpool so far. It will have done Thiago some good to have the chance to take a little break without the need to play every few days.

Hopefully the mini-break has seen him recover fully and put his injury issues behind him. Saturday’s supreme display show just how crucial he will be if Liverpool are to add to the Carabao Cup they won in February.

Disappointingly, Thiago is yet to feature in the three games against Manchester City since he signed for Liverpool. He could be the man to give The Reds that extra edge they need against world-class opposition.

Liverpool have two meetings coming up against Pep Guardiola’s side. There’s also potentially a third in the Champions League final. Let’s hope Thiago can stay fit and on top of his game for those big clashes.
