Garth Crooks has hailed Joe Gomez’s passing ability during Liverpool’s win over Watford on Saturday.
Writing in his Team of the Week column for BBC Sport, Crooks claimed that he was ‘mesmerised’ by the 24-year-old.
“Great to see Joe Gomez back in the Liverpool line-up. Injuries have blighted his career but the way he was spraying those balls into the Watford goal area for Diogo Jota to attack was just mesmerising,” wrote Crooks.
The pundit went on to say that if Gomez carries that kind of form into the rest of the season, he could be in line for an England re-call.
“Gomez needs a run of league games to get him back to the form that made him a certainty for international selection. There are very few English defenders who can play anywhere across the back four but Gomez can. He is a rare talent and on his day quite brilliant.”

Gomez the versatile
Gomez’s ability to slot in seamlessly into the right-back position is certainly one that can slip under the radar.
There were fears that Trent Alexander-Arnold could miss Liverpool’s enormous upcoming clash with Manchester City. Those fears look to have been put to bed, with Trent making the bench on Saturday.
But Gomez’s form over the two games he has stepped in for have shown that Liverpool are in capable hands should Trent have any further setback.
He backed up his performance against Nottingham Forest with a superb display at Anfield. The pinpoint cross to set up the opener for Jota was exactly what Liverpool expect from their right-back and Gomez provided it with aplomb.

We haven’t seen him reprise a left-back role for The Reds for quite some time now. But it’s often forgotten that his initial games for the club after signing in 2015 came in that position.
Game time has been hard to come by for the 24-year-old this season. But his versatility mean that he is still an incredible option to have for both Liverpool and England.
Alexander-Arnold is likely to return for Liverpool against Benfica on Tuesday night. Few Liverpool fans will have any qualms at all about that.
However, Gomez he has provided a timely reminder of his capabilities. The defender won’t be short of suitors if he decides he wants to leave this summer. But whether it’s at right-back or centre-back, he has shown that he does have a future at the club.
