Jack Grealish has responded in agreement with Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson’s post about England fans booing of Harry Maguire last night.

Henderson took to Instagram to post and impassioned defence of the Manchester United captain. Writing that he ‘couldn’t get his head around’ the booing and to ask ‘what have we become.’

“I second that!,” wrote Grealish over a screenshot of the Liverpool man’s post.

Nice to see England players of rival clubs coming together in support of a teammate. It’s no surprise to see Henderson leading the way.

Captain Fantastic

It remains a mystery as to why England manager Gareth Southgate overlooked Henderson for the captaincy when taking over in 2016.

Southgate instead opted for Harry Kane, despite Hendo already being Jurgen Klopp’s leader on the pitch at Liverpool.

As it is, Henderson has to settle for the vice-captaincy. But messages of support like the one posted for Maguire show that he is really captain in all but name.

The 31-year-old has grown into a real ambassador for both his club and country. He often leads the way in charitable initiatives and has given his support to some important causes over the years.

It may be that Southgate’s decision was based purely on who will be getting more regular game time for him.

Henderson started Saturday’s friendly win over Switzerland, but generally he is no longer in Southgate’s team for the biggest games. As the team’s main source of goals, Kane is a nailed on starter.

However, Grealish’s post is just another small example of the way that his teammates respond to Hendo’s leadership.

It seemed impossible for anyone to step into Steven Gerrard’s shoes as Liverpool captain. But Henderson has proved himself to be his very own Captain Fantastic.
