Mohamed Salah just got an important reminder ahead of crunch contract talks with Liverpool later this year. The Egyptian suffered some heartbreak.
Mohamed Salah won’t be going to the 2022 World Cup after Egypt suffered penalty heartbreak against Senegal. It’s the second time in three months that Salah has experienced that, in fact.
But while the AFCON final didn’t even see him take a penalty in the shootout, his World Cup qualifier did. Only, Salah blasted his kick over the crossbar as Egypt lost 3-1.
Now, to be fair to Salah, the lasers from the crowd made scoring a penalty quite ridiculous. That’s unlikely to be any solace, however, as one of the world’s best players watches the tournament from home this winter.
What this is, though, is a reminder to Salah ahead of contract talks with Liverpool later this year. And it’s a message he should pay attention to.

Salah’s contract expires in 2023 and there hasn’t been much movement on a new one. Per Fabrizio Romano, the player wants a big contract to reflect his status as a player. And that’s fair enough.
But Egypt’s failures are a reminder to Salah of what Liverpool bring him. He’s currently at a club that can deliver the biggest trophies in the game and push him to elite status as one of the best players around.
He’s a player whose teammates consider ‘special’ and is currently on course for a third Premier League Golden Boot. These things aren’t readily available elsewhere and as good as Salah is, he can’t just carry a team to success.
At Liverpool, though, he has the status of an elite player. Even if they don’t give him the financial riches that others possibly can, the club does deliver on giving him what he wants from the game.
Moving on is a massive risk and one with little guarantees beyond finances. It’s something that will almost certainly play on Salah’s mind when discussions resume.
