Report: Liverpool have offered £127,000 per week wages to ‘spectacular’ South American

Liverpool have offered a six-figure per week contract to Ronald Araujo, according to reports. The Uruguayan could leave Barcelona.

This comes from ESPN. They claim that Barcelona have offered just over £4m per year to their centre-back Ronald Araujo. The defender’s contract expires in 2023, making this an important year for the player.

Araujo could well opt against signing a new contract. That would almost certainly force Barcelona into selling him this summer, just to receive some sort of transfer fee. Their financial situation offers little choice on that one.

Their problem, then, is that other clubs are apparently willing to pay Araujo far more. Moises Llorens, who wrote the article for ESPN, took to Twitter to elaborate.

He claims that Bayern Munich, for one, have an offer of around £4m per year net on a five-year contract. Then there are Liverpool and Manchester United, who have made it know that they’ll give Araujo about £6.6m per year.

Barcelona, it seems, might struggle to keep the 23-year-old that Xavi considers ‘spectacular’.

Liverpool offer £6m per year to Ronald Araujo

£6m per year works out to around £127k per week. That’s a fairly sizeable wage for a player we’re not entirely sure makes the first XI. In fact, there’s an argument that Araujo would be fourth-choice at best if he did arrive.

And that might even be generous. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have all proven themselves at a much higher level than Araujo. Konate is getting there, too, and already a perfect fit in the team.

So we’re not 100 per cent on this one. We can see plenty of positives in signing Araujo but it will take money and promises to get him. We’re just not entirely sure he improves the squad enough to justify it.

At the same time, he is a fantastic talent and Liverpool secure a very exciting future if he were to arrive. Would they get £6m per year of quality out of Araujo over a five-year contract? Very possibly – but it might take some workarounds to begin with.
