Liverpool’s Diogo Jota scores a fantastic bullet header for Portugal in their World Cup Play-Off against Turkey. The forward made it 2-0 for his country.

Diogo Jota arrived at Liverpool in 2020 with a growing but unspectacular reputation. Everything he’s done since has grown that reputation, however, and Jota is now one of the best finishers around.

If anyone has any doubt about that, they need only watch his goal for Portugal earlier this evening. Jota started upfront in a massive World Cup Play-Off against Turkey.

Otavio put Portugal ahead but Turkey managed a few chances to get back into the game. Jota, though, would produce an incredible header to make it 2-0.

Otavio, again, made things happen. His chipped pass to the far edge of the six-yard box created the chance but to say Jota had a lot to do from there is an understatement. Somehow, he generated enough power and accuracy with a header to find the bottom corner.

And the accuracy truly was brilliant. There was one ball-shaped spot Jota needed to put the ball in order to score and he found it.

What a player Jota has become. Jurgen Klopp labelled him a ‘perfect signing’ back in November and that’s exactly how it’s been.

Jota arrived as a winger who offered pace and pressing. He’s now primarily a centre-forward who can finish any kind of chance, even if he’s not playing particularly well. And that’s actually something we saw against Turkey – he missed a sitter shortly before the goal.

But head, right foot, left foot – Jota can score. The versatility in his scoring is absolutely elite and a skill that remarkably few forwards can match.

Liverpool found a special one when they signed Jota. An incredible forward – for club and country.
