Diogo Jota demonstrated his incredible skill unique to the Liverpool squad vs Everton on Wednesday. The 24-year-old put in a sensational performance.
Diogo Jota was simply brilliant against Everton. He played the centre-forward/False 9 role once again but has never looked quite as good as this.
The Portuguese livewire has had fantastic games and certainly flashier games, of course. This performance, though, showed Jota as having an all-around game to rival Roberto Firmino in the role. We’re not sure we’ve seen that before.
But there was one flashy moment. Jota scored a magnificent goal to make it 4-1, roasting Allan in the box before firing past Jordan Pickford. And in scoring it, he demonstrated a world-class skill that few players can match.
Diogo Jota shows off skill vs Everton
Jota made Allan look quite amateur with his flick. He left the Brazilian for dead, managing to create space for himself in the box. We question why Pickford stayed on his line, admittedly, as that also gave Jota time to pick his finish.
And with Everton’s no.1 staying back, there were two finishes – over or under. Jota picked over and fired it into the roof of the net.
What’s truly impressive here, though, is just how two-footed Jota is at finishing. There’s no one else in the Liverpool squad quite like that – though, Sadio Mane comes close.
But Jota seems equally brilliant finishing with both feet. It meant that it didn’t really matter where his flick landed as he could get his finish off anyway.
And we saw that. He rifled it past Pickford with his left foot without any hesitation, not needing to adjust his body at all. How do you defend that?
We wrote over a year ago how this was a skill that benefits Liverpool. It was really on show with this goal against Everton, though, as Jota left them helpless.
He can go left or right, you can’t show him onto a weaker foot and the 24-year-old gets his shot off in an instant. There are a thousand reasons to get excited over Jota right now and you can add this skill to the list.
