Mohamed Salah holds an uncertain future at Liverpool – but so do Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino. There are big decisions coming.
There has been a lot of talk around Mohamed Salah and his Liverpool contract in the last few weeks. Well, really, it’s been something discussed heavily all season long – he only has one year left after this one, after all.
Fabrizio Romano, for instance, has talked about Salah’s stance.
“Salah is not desperate to leave this summer, so 2022,” Romano said on YouTube. “He’s out of contract in 2023, so Mo Salah could stay at Liverpool and leave, potentially, as a free agent if they’re not able to reach an agreement in the next 15 months. So there’s still time.”
And that’s where all of the focus has been – will Salah stay? If he doesn’t, will he stick around until 2023 or should Liverpool sell this summer? It’s the defining question at the club.
But should it be? Liverpool actually have a much bigger overriding decision this summer and it’s one in which Salah only plays a part.
Mohamed Salah at Liverpool
Salah is the best player at Liverpool right now – a sensational talent and the star attacker in England. But he’s far from the only star attacker at the club and much of his success comes from the trio he forms at Liverpool with Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino.
All three of them have expiring contracts in 2023, however. Liverpool must decide on all of their futures this summer – no easy discussion as they’ll each be beyond 30 when that time comes.
There’s very little discussion around that, though, as all of the focus surrounds Salah. We’d argue that it’s the trio as a whole that represents the real decision here, though.

Because losing both Mané and Firmino would very likely be a more drastic change than losing the Egyptian and keeping those two. It would be a wholesale change at the club and a sign that the club is moving on from their hugely successful side of the last few years.
The lack of talk around it is actually quite strange as he don’t have any real suggestion either way. We don’t know if the plan is to offer Mané and Firmino new contracts and whether they have long-term futures. Salah does – that’s been established and he’s had an offer – but the other two remain in the dark.
But their futures, along with Salah’s, is truly the major decision that Jurgen Klopp and co. must make this summer.
