Liverpool are now strong front-runners to sign 15-year-old Irish winger Trent Kone-Doherty.
According to Independent.ie, The Reds have made an ‘assertive move’ to sign the youngster from Derry City. With no other clubs mentioned here, it’s ‘anticipated that he will end up in Liverpool.’
The report claims that should the deal go through, Liverpool will pay the Irish club a ‘six-figure’ compensation fee.
Liverpool are reportedly looking to tie-up a pre-contract with Kone-Doherty. Having already featured on the bench for his club’s first-team, the Irishman can play on either wing.
Previously spending time training with Celtic, the prospect has also already been involved with the Republic of Ireland under-16 and under-17 squad.
After Brexit, English clubs can no longer sign EU based players under the age of 18. But the Independent report that this doesn’t apply to Irish teenagers, giving Liverpool the all-clear to make their move.
Double-barrelled joy
This comes as surprising, and excellent news for Liverpool. After reports that The Reds are set to sign pacey young winger Ben Doak from Celtic, this represents another exciting move for an academy prospect.
It seems that Liverpool are stocking up on young wingers who can potentially break into the first-team in three or four years time.
As well as these two potential signings, Liverpool already have the likes of Kaide Gordon and Mateusz Musialowski. 15-year-old forward Keyrol Figueroa has also been making waves recently.
Although it does beg the question where do they all play, it’s great to see the club thinking of the future.
Jurgen Klopp has shown time and time again that he’s not averse to throwing inexperienced players into his team. And that is clearly being recognised as more youngsters choose to spend their development at Liverpool.
Kone-Doherty will follow Gordon, Harvey Elliott and hopefully Doak, in leaving their hometown clubs for The Reds.
As far as omens go, the last Trent who came through the academy also had a double-barrelled surname. He didn’t turn out too badly at all.
