Liverpool academy player Keyrol Figueroa could be in line for a call-up to Honduras’ under-20 team. That’s despite being only 15-years-old.

The youngster, who plays as a striker, was given some words of encouragement by coach of the side Luis Alvarado via Diez.

“He applies for the next U-20 National Team, he is quite young, he is a very good player and we have seen his videos,” said Alvarado.

Figueroa is the son of former Wigan Athletic and Hull City defender Maynor Figueroa. Now 38, Maynor is unbelievably still playing for his national team having won a staggering 182 caps.

That’s a big act to follow. And Alvarado says that the teenager has been seeking advice from his father.

“At the time he has talked closely with Maynor Figueroa about his situation, he studies in England, he is one more option for the next U-20 without a doubt‎.”

As the son of a legend in Honduras, Figueroa may get accusations of nepotism aimed at him. But the 15-year-old has already featured three times for Liverpool’s under-18 side. He clearly has something.

Famous friends

As well as having a famous father, Keyrol has already found that some big names are keeping an eye on his progress.

Atletico Madrid forward and World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann has reportedly taken on the role of mentor to the young Honduran.

That’s according to The Daily Star who claim that the Liverpool academy striker has been receiving messages of support from the 31-year-old.

How Griezmann became aware of Figueroa’s talents isn’t clear. But the Frenchman has been reportedly messaging the youngster with words of advice through Whatsapp.

Making an impression

Having moved to England at the age of one, when his Dad joined Wigan, Keyrol also has British Citizenship. He joined Liverpool in 2018 and, according to his mother, scored 90 goals for Liverpool’s underage sides.

“It’s in the under-13/14 category. He is doing well in his matches, the previous season he scored 90 goals,” said Sandra Norales, Keyrol’s Mum in 2019 via LaPrensa.

The future certainly looks bright for young Keyrol. Let’s hope that he continues his development whether he gets his international call-up or not.
