Jurgen Klopp says one ‘outstanding’ moment against Arsenal showed how Andy Robertson is still improving for Liverpool. The Scot registered a fantastic assist.

Liverpool took a great step towards the Premier League title on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Arsenal. They now sit just one point behind Manchester City and still must play the champions. Game on.

The Reds really put in a mixed bag of a performance at the Emirates, though. The first half was quite disappointing but three moments of incredible quality won the game in the second.

The first came from Alisson Becker. Thiago’s terrible backpass created a golden opportunity for Arsenal but Alisson defended it spectacularly well. As Jamie Carragher said after the game, it was a moment that could prove decisive this season.

Thiago made up for things, though. His fantastic assist for Diogo Jota opened the scoring and Liverpool settled things with a second soon after.

That second goal left a particularly strong impression on Jurgen Klopp. It saw Andy Robertson win the ball back for Liverpool very high up the pitch – the counter-press working to perfection. The Scot then waited for the right moment to assist Roberto Firmino for the second goal.

Andy Robertson at Liverpool

“It’s the full package of Robbo,” Klopp said of the moment at a press conference on Friday. “Not only as a player but as a person as well.

“He wants really desperately to deliver and work for the team and the goal was not only one of my favourites for a long, long time. First, we win the ball back and second, Robbo is waiting with his cross until he saw Bobby was ready for it.

“He and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] obviously set up a lot of goals but there is still room for improvement in the decisive moments. That was an incredible pass in the end – Bobby had to do a lot to get it past [Aaron] Ramsdale – but the cross or pass was outstanding.”

It is truly fantastic that Robertson, with all he’s achieved in the game, can still kick on further. This might not seem like that much on the face of it but we’re talking about the absolute highest level, here. The small things make all the difference.

And that goal was all Robertson. The way he chased the ball down, blocked the clearance, pounced on the fortunate bounce and played the perfect pass – sensational. No wonder Klopp considers it a favourite goal.

If he can continue to deliver over the latter part of the season, Robertson can absolutely help deliver more trophies. Especially if he just keeps improving.
