Report: Liverpool make first moves for ‘extraordinary’ 22-year-old who wants to play in the Premier League

Liverpool have made contact about a potential transfer for Aurélién Tchouaméni, according to reports in Spain. The French midfielder is held in incredibly high regard.

This comes from Marca. They’re reporting on Real Madrid’s interest in Aurélién Tchouaméni but the competition is quite fierce. In fact, Real are in an awkward position for any signing.

They do want Tchouaméni, seeing him as an ideal replacement for Casemiro. However, their money will go towards Kylian Mbappe and, potentially, Erling Haaland this summer. Thus they actually want Tchouaméni to wait until a future transfer window before their offer.

It’s what happened with Eduardo Camavinga, after all. Maybe it’ll happen again.

Working against Real, though, is that Tchouaméni likes the idea of playing in the Premier League. Two clubs have an interest, too – Liverpool and Manchester United. Both have apparently made enquiries to see if the player would want a move and both received positive answers.

This isn’t the first report linking Liverpool with Tchouaméni. The Athletic mentioned back in January that he was on their list, likely for the summer.

And it’s no great surprise. Liverpool have some key midfielders now moving through their 30s and Tchouaméni is one of the best young options around. Just listen to Paul Pogba, who says his international teammate is ‘extraordinary’.

“Pleasure to play next to him,” said Pogba. “He brings a lot of energy. A lot of energy, extraordinary technical and physical quality.”

We’ve also written out thoughts about the move, back in October when there were tentative links. We stand by all the positivity around it, though – Tchouaméni would be a sensational summer signing.

But there is one thing to consider. Tchouaméni might actually move Liverpool towards a new formation as a partnership alongside Fabinho would make a lot of sense. In that reality, this could be a much bigger move than it first looks.
