‘You can’t say that’: Two TalkSPORT pundits completely disagree after claim made about Liverpool’s current squad

Darren Bent has agreed with a statement that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are the strongest Premier League team of all time. But TalkSPORT co-host Andy Goldstein completely disagrees.

After a Liverpool fan called TalkSPORT to make the bold claim (1min 25secs), Goldstein couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“You can’t say that yet!” exclaimed Goldstein when told that Liverpool were stronger than any side over the last 30 years.

Bent put him straight though. “It probably is,” replied the former England striker. “That’s madness,” came Golstein’s response.

One has played for five different clubs across 11 seasons in the Premier League. The other is… a Manchester United fan. We know who’s side we’re on!

Making the most of it

Liverpool’s squad is no doubt one of the strongest ever assembled in English football. The first eleven has been teeming with world-class talent for some time now. But in players like the domestic cup king Takumi Minamino, Klopp now has the back-up to match.

However, if the manager’s most recent comments are anything to go by, Liverpool fans might have to enjoy the new-found depth while it lasts.

Speaking with Sky Sports yesterday, the manager suggested that a number of players could move on once the window opens this summer.

“It is unlikely with the size of the squad that we now stay exactly like this together,” said Klopp.

“For sure, some of the players do not play often enough for their own understanding and we will see what will come in the summer and find solutions for those situations.”

That’s disappointing to hear, but doesn’t come as a great surprise either. There’s a reason why it’s so difficult to assemble such an accomplished squad – good players want to play every game.

Finding solutions

The likes of Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are players who could be unhappy at a lack of game time this season. With quality players ahead of them, they both look unlikely to be starters any time soon.

But both are potentially too good to be sitting on the bench.

For this reason, Klopp possibly feels that the squad is slightly bloated. It could then be that more players leave Liverpool than join this summer.

No matter though, because Liverpool are building players to step up from the academy. Kaide Gordon can expect a bigger role next season, as can youngsters like Conor Bradley who will hope to make the back-up right-back position his own.

News is coming through this week that The Reds will add exciting Celtic youngster Ben Doak to the mix, too. Meanwhile there are high hopes for 31-goal 17-year-old Oakley Cannonier.

Liverpool have never been a club to go and splash massive money without consequence, they spend what they earn. If this current squad does have to be broken up at the end of this season, let’s hope it does so having done something historic.
