Liverpool have reportedly set a £23m price-tag on Joe Gomez as they prepare to sell the centre-back this summer.

This comes via The Express who claim that the fee could scare off potential suitors Fulham. The report also claims there is interest in Gomez from West Ham United, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

If Liverpool were to recoup the full reported asking price this summer, it would give them a big profit on Gomez.

The 24-year-old was signed for a mere £3.5m in the summer of 2015. He has since gone on to be a big part of a squad that has won the Champions League and the Premier League, amongst other things.

Pound for pound, Gomez has surely turned out to be one of the best value signings Liverpool have ever made.

A price reflective of the situation

Should Gomez be move on this summer, some Liverpool fans may be expecting a bigger fee than the one quoted.

At times during his Liverpool career he has looked like one of the best centre-back’s in the country. At 24, he is still young enough to fulfil that potential and become a key player for England.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s use of Gomez this season likely means that The Reds can’t ask for a higher price.

There have been reports that, given his current status in the squad, the player wants to leave Liverpool (90min). Having only started one Premier League game all season, it’s hard to put the blame on Gomez for that.

If he does want to move on, it’s unlikely that Liverpool and Klopp would try to price him out of a move.

Gomez hasn’t played enough football this season to see whether he can return to the same levels he was reaching before his season-wrecking knee problem last year.

It could be that £23m is a fair price for the England man, and it would still mean a more than healthy profit for the club as they look for a replacement. Meanwhile, Gomez gets another shot at first-team football. Everybody wins.
