Liverpool have ‘made a proposal’ to 17-year-old Barcelona midfielder Gavi.

That’s according to journalist Gerard Romero who claimed via his Twitch stream that The Reds are making their move.

Romero followed this up with a post on Twitter which claimed that Liverpool have made a contract proposal of £5m per year to the Spanish international, which is the clearest signal yet of their desire to land the young prodigy.

It comes after Mundo Deportivo reported yesterday that Liverpool are one of the favourites to make a move for Gavi this summer.

Gavi wants a new contract

In truth, it seems unlikely that Liverpool will sign Gavi. In the same report from Mundo Deportivo, it’s claimed that the La Masia graduate wants to stay on at Barca.

With that in mind, it feels as though the links to Liverpool are nothing more than a bargaining chip to get an improved contract.

This is a shame as Gavi would be an excellent signing for The Reds. If they were willing to push the boat out and put down a big contract offer – as Romero suggests they already have – it could make the teenager consider his options.

He has already played 33 times for Barcelona and has four caps for Spain, which shows his level of potential.

It’s true that Barca are at a pretty low ebb at the moment. But the emergence of Gavi alongside fellow youngsters such as Pedri and Ansu Fati has given them hope for the future.

Gavi could hardly be learning from a better coach now that legendary midfielder Xavi has returned to the club. And the manager is obviously delighted to have Gavi on board too, he called him incredible via Marca just last month.

A signing that would make sense

In terms of playing style, Gavi looks every inch a Barcelona midfielder. At 5 feet 8 inches he’s small, but his technical qualities are outstanding. It would be a joy to watch him in Liverpool’s midfield.

The Reds have been linked to a galaxy of midfield options for a potential summer move. One that would excite many fans would be Jude Bellingham.

However, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder is likely to cost double Gavi’s current release clause, with wage demands potentially similar too.

If Liverpool are looking for a midfielder for the next decade or more, as Bellingham surely would be, then they can put Gavi in that same bracket.

It isn’t often a potential superstar becomes available for such a low fee and Liverpool should go all out to make a statement signing.

One man who would surely love to see the move happen is Jamie Redknapp. The Sky pundit was left demanding to ‘see his birth certificate’ after a particularly impressive display from Gavi in the Nations League Final loss to France.

Let’s see what happens from here.
